Rajinikanth’s screen presence is still the most reliable thing in Indian mass cinema. Jailer 2 asks it to do far more than one star can.

Some stars make a film watchable. A rare few make it feel like an event even when it isn’t one. Rajinikanth is firmly in the second group, and Jailer 2 leans on that fact harder than a sequel should.

What Jailer 2 Sets Out to Do

Nelson Dilipkumar brings back Muthuvel Pandian, the retired jailer Rajinikanth played in 2023’s Jailer, and builds the sequel around the consequences of what the character did at the end of the first film, as describes the setup. The 2023 film was one of the biggest hits of its year, reported as the third-highest-grossing Indian film of 2023, so the pressure on a sequel was never about opening day. It was about whether the film could justify itself once the novelty had worn off.

Rajinikanth: Still the Whole Show

If there is one point on which the reviews of Jailer 2 agree, it is this. LokaChitra calls the superstar’s screen presence the film’s biggest strength, and the film works mainly because of it. We see it the same way. Mass films of this kind are built around one particular skill, the ability of the star to change the mood of a room, and at this stage of his career Rajinikanth’s version of it is still unmatched.

Where the Writing Lets It Down

The trouble is everything around him.  story as the film’s biggest problem and finds the second half stretched. The Week describes a more complicated picture: some of Nelson’s funniest writing in the first half, followed by familiar action tropes and an uneven handling of cameos and secondary characters. Its conclusion is that in fixing what did not work in the first film, Nelson ends up breaking some of what did.

That tension is the film in a sentence. The comedy earns its laughs where it is written as comedy, and the plot struggles wherever it has to carry weight. Our rating reflects that gap: a star performance at full strength, and a screenplay that keeps asking it to cover for what the writing has not built.

The Cameos and the Supporting Cast

Reports name Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar and Hrithik Roshan among the cameo appearances, well-placed cameos as a bonus. The Week reads their handling, along with the film’s secondary arcs, as one of its weaker areas. Vidya Balan and Suraj Venjaramoodu are part of the principal cast, out the comic scenes involving Namo Narayana and Yogi Babu as part of what works. Critics are divided on the cameos, and that is worth knowing before you buy tickets for one in particular.

A Familiar Pattern

None of this is new for the franchise. When the first film opened in 2023, reviewers made a similar point: Rajinikanth shoulders the film while papering over a formulaic plot, and that it was left to the star to carry the weight of an erratic script. The sequel inherits that dependence, and whether it is a strength or a limit depends on how much you want from a Rajinikanth film beyond Rajinikanth.

Despite of Our Reviews and other reviews, film nevers stops at box office it will become Block Buster hit, but difficult to Pass ₹1000 Crores Record.

Our 2.5/5 sits below the published ratings we found. We weigh the writing more heavily than the star power.

Verdict

Jailer 2 is for Rajinikanth’s audience first. If you are going for the star, the screen presence, and a theatre full of people reacting together, the film delivers that and become biggest succes at Box Office. If you want a tightly constructed thriller, adjust your expectations: the writing does not match the magic it is built around.
